An impressive and wide display
2.A complete suite of Armour

Decidedly Panoply for 2010’s October Free For Arts festival was successful at rearing a few performance artists heads towards new ideas of working in differing mediums.

Panoply is a performance art event based in costume, fashion design and theatre.
It is a new cultural masquerade.

The Volkov Commanders bring Panoply to the as of yet vacant, Piccadilly Place ground floor retail units. The space is brutalist in it's architectural style without any soft wood or polished floors. Replacing the lack of shop furnishings with progressive fashion design and live sculptural works displayed in front of an audience. Appropriating ‘commerce’ and the commercial in order to insert within it the hand made and conceptually driven.

Much like the Witworth Galleries’ seminal exhibition, Marina Abromovic presents, the audience must navigate a space within which the performers inhabit throughout the event, in Panoply however some performances stop and start, some only last a few minutes, some the entirety of the event, and so culminate in a throng of differing and staggered live pieces.

As the Volkov Commanders we purposefully want to create fiction for the sake of spectacle. Our aims are to look forwards, bringing artists and performers together whose work is dissident of contemporary cultural practices. Our intention is to perpetuate our events as a future ritual, as though free thinking and witty creatives inhabit underground enclaves oppressed and opposed by the droning masses. We want the audience to feel part of our future art cult and feel persuaded to join us.

BURY BLACK PUDDING DRESS

HUSSAINDEYN were commissioned by 'the Rock Bury' to create a dress made from bury black pudding to promote their party season collections. We came up with the idea of making a 60's paneled mini dress and cape using vinyl and suiting material. The making was hilarious and at times quite gross. But surprisingly the results look really good. You can read about it here.

This Friday night sees the opening of a great new exhibition in Manchester, HLD TGHT presents Joyride playground in the basement of the soup kitchen in Manchester. The days running up to the show will see the space become an open studio with each artist creating their work on site.
The open studio will be a great place to come and meet lots of fresh-faced local and national artists in a buzzing, creative atmosphere. HLD TGHT includes:

SCREEN PRINTING AND APPLIQUE WORKSHOPS

HUSSAINDEYN'S good friends One69a and RAG are collaborating to give you the opportunity to design, print and make your own t-shirt.
Using appliqué paper and various types of fabric, participants will have the opportunity to create shapes from drawings/images that can be ironed and then stitched to t-shirts, this can be incorporated with screen printing either over the design or onto the fabric before applying. Using silk screens and hand cut stencils you can draw and print your own designs and combine this with the simple appliqué technique to create your very own bespoke tshirt.

These workshops will be held in the newly refurbished club and gallery space at Islington Mill.

One69a design, make and print a variety of products at their studio in Islington Mill, Salford. All of our products are printed by hand using silk screens. We also facilitate a range of creative projects and workshops in Manchester and beyond.

RAG hand-me-down clothing is a Manchester based clothing label that uses vintage, recycled and handed down fabric to create unique garments.

The bar will be open with a delicious selection of food and refreshments for you to enjoy before and after the workshop. You can also save on the pennies by pre ordering food when you book you place on the workshop!

The gallery will also be open for you to peruse the latest exhibition. If you wish to stay into the evening, there will also be the opportunity to catch live music and various club nights.

A showcase of creative talent from Manchester, the project is a collaborative effort with each individual working together as a group to produce a unique event that shows off each of their talents. It’s also provided an opportunity for each individual to meet and work with other creatives in ways not necessarily in keeping with their discipline.
Included in the crop are a graphic designer, a photographer, a filmmaker, an artist, a DJ, a skater, a writer, a producer, a singer and a collective.

The finished product includes video interviews of each individual filmed by Louisa Mayman and interview questions by Natalie Esquire. The logo was designed by Robert Walmsley and then printed onto t-shirts by the collective ONE69a. Portrait photographs of each person was taken by Sebastian Matthes then illustrated by Tank Petrol. A live Dj set will take place on the night mixed by Johny Dub, produced by Ryan Hunn with vocals from Jenna G.

This Easter weekend Vintage Threads will be teaming up with creative collective group one69a and HussainDeyn for a collaborative workshop.
The workshop will run within a series of sessions over the weekend (see below ) to teach all of you out there how to re-vamp and re-design your old wardrobe.

During the session you will be shown basic customisation techniques, incorporating vintage style. You will also have the opportunity to use ready made stencils to print onto your creations using silk screens.

So whether it’s something you’ve bought from Vintage Threads that day or an old garment from your wardrobe that needs a new lease of life then one69a and Hussaindeyn are on hand to help (P.S all those who buy clothes to alter will be given free cakes)

You can bring along your own fashion items to transform and we will also provide a plain t-shirt, a bag and second hand garments for you to experiment with.

HUSSAINDEYN got a chance to show off some new work at a recent exhibition at Mirabel studios in Manchester. The work looks at the notion of confinement and the feeling of being trapped. A kite is used as a metaphor for a free being that is forced to conform to the rules of an unfamiliar environment yet longing to escape. The work was made using photography and finally an interactive installation.

HUSSAINDEYN HIT KOSOVO

HUSSAINDEYN were flat packed, bubble wrapped, sealed, stamped and shipped off to Kosovo this November for their first international exhibition. The exhibition which took place in the Kosovan capital of Prishtina at ExpoArt 40 Gallery saw 13 Manchester based artists exhibit their work in a show which looked at different social realities between the two countries and an exchange of dialogue using art as a narrative. The project is to continue into the new year with a trip over to create new work based on experiences in the city.

HUSSAINDEYN had an amazing time recently in Venice at the Biennale,so much artwork to see by some amazing international artists. Highlights of the holiday included cycling around Lido on a tandem in the sunshine, getting chased by fearless wasps on the beach, eating salami sandwiches everyday, having to wear fur coats in 25 degree heat because we just couldn't resist all those bargains in Bologna and filled our suitcases to bursting point. Good times!

Here are a few designs we've come up with for MAG (Mines Advisory Group) once finalised they will appear on t-shirts nationwide. It's been a real eyeopener working for this charity and researching all the amazing things they do clearing landmines across the world.

DEGREE SHOW

HUSSAIN'S degree show work is a presentation of a shop in an imagined post capitalist future. The recession has forced many buisiness' to close and thus leaving many once full shop fittings empty. By placing images of the now empty spaces into the spaces meant for commodities, the once functional objects are rendered usless and the viewer is now forced to observe the aesthetics and form as the shop fittings become sculptural.

HUSSAINDEYN were living it up in London last week as HUSSAIN was announced the winner of the jury's commendation prize for the Google Photography prize. We drank cocktails, ate very small canapes and HUSSAIN'S work was on show in the Saatchi Gallery for one week. AMAZING!

The degree show was a roaring success and the highlight has to be HUSSAINDEYN'S show stopper logo suspended from the ceiling of the beautiful old Holden gallery. Some might say we stole the show.

HUSSAINDEYN are very excited to be involved in a project with north west based charity MAG (Mines Advisory Group)

HUSSAINDEYN will be designing new tshirts for the charity, they will be available to buy on the MAG website at the end of summer. We will keep you posted with our design ideas.

HUSSAINDEYN have been out of action for a week or two, having a well earned rest after the madness of finishing uni. The camera was also out of action as it got left in a taxi in London. You can see lukes reaction when he found out he'd forgotten it. You don't want to see HUSSAINDEYNS! All is good now, we are back (so is the camera) and we have plenty lined up for the summer.

HUSSAINDEYN finally got to install our over sized logo into the gallery today hence the scaffolding. There were a lot of 'to me to you' moments and cries of higher/lower until we got the perfect positioning. We will post the finished result soon.

HUSSAINDEYN were at Mercers today, and the manager kindly let us take photographs of the once great shop. Mercers is in it's final few days of trading after 169 years of business in Blackburn. So sad, HUSSAINDEYN used to get all our art supplies from mercers when we were at college; but we got some great photographs and lots of interesting things for sculptures today. Goodbye, you will be missed.

EXCUSE ME STANDING ON ONE LEG, IM HALF CASTE

An experimental endurance performance piece using henna paste on half of my body, to make the term half caste an actuality if only for a few days. This piece tries to challenge the stereo types and challenge people reactions when they see a half white half orange person walking down the street. Being mixed race can sometimes be difficult, especially when it comes down to loyalty and having to prove who exactly you are. So by literally dying half of my body a different colour this highlights this problem. Also with the eventual fade back to white it shows my choices that have naturally occurred throughout the course of my life. And it looks pretty cool. Thanks to John Agard and year 10 English anthology.

HUSSAINDEYN were “bending it” for one day only in the Link gallery Manchester. This endurance performance piece is an ode to our favorite art duo Gilbert and George. The pair invented living sculpture back in their art school days. Since then their ideas have been translated into street performance with gold and white painted sculptures popping up on various street corners around the world.

For this performance we wanted to reclaim the notion of living sculpture as a piece of art to be shown in a gallery but also incorporate the new element of busking as a way to raise some funds for the interactive arts degree show.

Another big influence for this piece is working living sculpture who currently stands on market street, Manchester, he is the sorriest looking statue we have ever seen with his poorly painted clothes and face. This work is an ode to him and his dedication to his art and we are hoping to emulate him with our piece.

INVERTED SPACES AT CAFFE STYLO

This piece takes a building in the centre of Blackburn that is being closed down due to the recession and incorporates collage by placing life size photographs of the windows and the passers by that were taken during a once prosperous time and places the now defunct images over the empty building. This highlights the contrast between what was and what is now. The frozen moments are printed in black and white to signify the past, ans also highlights the bleak outlook for the future. The video will be presented as an installation at MMU.
